Revisiting The 3rd Ebenezer Soola Conference On Communication

It was a day of appreciation at the conference centre, University of Ibadan on Wednesday 28th October, 2016 when the creme-de-la-creme of communication studies converged to celebrate foremost Professor of Communication, Professor Ebenezer Soola during the 3rd edition of his conference on communication.

 

In his welcome address, the Head of Department, Communication and Language Arts, University of Ibadan, Professor Ayobami Ojebode represented by Dr. Olusola Oyewo, congratulated Professor Soola for successfully supervising 22 PhD thesis and on his forthcoming 70th birthday.
In her keynote address, the Ag. Head, Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Dr. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, spoke extensively on the need for communication, change management and sustainable development.
She said the government of Nigeria must communicate with Nigerians from time to time in order to participate in governance.
“In
the context of change management, effective communication is crucial if
citizens are to make intelligent judgements about policies and activities of
their elected representatives in the quest for sustainable development.  Also, through communication, it is hoped that
citizens will have the necessary background to participate fully in the
formation of government policies.” She quoted Wilcox et al.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Idowu Olayinka represented by the Dean Faculty of Arts, Professor Babatunde Ekanola described the celebrant as a man whose life speaks to others, an academic, father, and a man clad in humility.

Speaking with Precision Journos, Professor Soola expressed surprise and joy that the conference had come to stay.
“My PhD students are always full of surprises” he said.

Various speakers gave good will and congratulatory messages at the event, describing Professor Soola as a role model and a man who is yet to reach academic menopause.
The conference began in the year 2007 and was organised by his PhD students who saw it as a way of honouring and celebrating him even while alive.
