In line with its goals of having health club in some selected schools, the Gwadabawa zone of the Peer Educator Trainers CDS group has revived the already dead PET club in Government Science Secondary, Gwadabawa in Gwadabawa Local government area of sokoto state.
A statement by the group’s public relations officer, Richard Adura-Ilesanmi said it has commenced training for some students of the school who will in turn educate their peers and their immediate environment on the scourge of HIV/AIDs.
The event held at the SS3 block of the school was attended by leadership of the group in Gwadabawa zone and other members who throned the venue in their numbers.
Declaring the event open, president of the club, Damilare Fadodun congratulated the students for their decision to save lives by taking the right step of joining the club.
While submitting that Many people are living in fear of HIV and AIDS for lack of necessary information, the president said the students would be adequately equipped to be anti-HIV agent by correcting the perception of their colleagues and host communities on about the disease.
The event also featured a lecture on HIV and AIDs delivered by Imoleayo Tolu PET AY. But before going into the lecture proper, the lecturer sought to know the perception of the students about HIV/AIDs.
Responses from the students showed that 80% of them held the misconceptions that HIV can be contracted through touching and eating with infected persons, sneezing, sharing of soap and sponge, sharing of clothes among others.
Doing justice to the lecture in both English and Hausa languages, PET AY thus corrected their misconceptions about HIV/AIDs educating them that it could only be contracted through sharing sharp object with infected persons, through unsafe sex life among others.
HIV/AIDs according to the lecturer has constituted a great risk to the people urging them to take the training seriously in order to prevent its further spread.
The lecture later transformed into an interactive session where the participants ask questions for more clarifications.
Other members who spoke on the occasion urged the students to cascade the knowledge gained and be ready to champion a campaign against HIV/AIDS
While admonishing them to be careful with blood, they equally advised them to invite their friends to join the club.
The lecture is being held every Saturday.
