The National Assembly has been urged to ensure quick passage of a media Enhancement bill that will legally empower Nigeria Union of Journalists to regulate practicing of journalism profession in the country.

The enhancement bill that will be sponsored by the union will also criminalise owing of journalists’ salaries by media owners.

The NUJ National President, Waheed Odusile gave the charge in Lagos at the opening ceremony of the quarterly meeting of the Union’s B-Zone that is being attended by the NUJ Chairmen and General Secretaries of Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and Lagos States.

Mr Odusile who expressed dismay over increasing rate of quackery in the profession across the country, said if such bill was passed into law, NUJ or any other regulatory body would have a legal framework to weed out bad eggs in the media industry.

He said the poor and irregular salaries of journalists’ salaries would also be tackled by the proposed media law and advised members of NUJ to embrace the ongoing biometric registration in the union.

On the ongoing constitution review, the NUJ president described the failure of the Senate to adopt devolution of powers for state governments as unacceptable, adding that majority of Nigerians want restructuring of the country.

THE PRECISION gathered that the ceremony was also attended by two members of the national assembly, Babajinmi Benson and Akinwumi Olaitan and other top government functionaries.
