The United Nations Security Council today unanimously passed a resolution imposing new sanctions on North Korea for its continued intercontinental ballistic missile testing and violations of UN resolutions.

The sanctions will slash North Korea’s $3 billion annual export revenue by more than a third, according to the office of US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
Haley, in an interview with CNN’s Ana Cabrera, called the sanctions “a gut punch” to North Korea and warned of possible military action should the regime continue its aggression.
“What I will tell you from the United States’ perspective, we’re prepared to do whatever it takes to defend ourselves and defend our allies,” Haley said. “The ball is North Korea’s court. They now have to decide where they want to go from here. We hope that they will go the route of peace and security.”
Haley’s comments echo those of H.R. McMaster, the White House national security adviser. McMaster said the possibility that North Korea could possess nuclear weapons capable of reaching the United States would be “intolerable” and could lead to a US military response.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, meanwhile, will meet Sunday with the Association of East Asian Nations in the Philippines. As part of his pressure campaign against North Korea, he will ask members to consider ousting the country from the group.
