Ondo First Lady Leads Advocacy As LAPDO, USAID, PIND Partner On Gender Friendly Agric Policy | The Precision

The workshop titled “Enhancing inclusive Agricultural
Governance through smallholder Women Farmers participation in
Agricultural sector in Ondo State” is aimed at increasing stakeholder
knowledge of the project interventions and solicit their inputs to
strengthen its achievements, as well as inaugurating Agriculture Gender
Friendly Policy Development Technical Working Group (TWG)

 

The workshop organised by Life and Peace
Development Organisation (LAPDO) in collaboration with United States
Agency For International Development (USAID) and Partnership Initiatives
in the Niger Delta (PIND), had in attendance the wife of Ondo State
Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, Chairman, House Committee
on Agriculture, Hon. Towase Kuti, Rep. From the facilitators, women
farmers among others.
The
Consultant, Kazeem Balogun while disseminating the research findings on
supportive environment for women farmers in Ondo State, recommended
that, there should be need for a new Agricultural Policy in Ondo State.
He also lauded the present administration in the State for increasing
the budget allocation to Agricultural Sector from 1.17% in 2016 to 5.12%
in 2017.

In her keynote address, the first lady of Ondo State, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu appreciated the efforts of USAID, PIND and LAPDO for creating a
line item Agro Women Initiative to support smallholder women farmers.

She also reiterated some of the achievements of
the present government in the agricultural sector since assumption of
office; allocation to agriculture in the 2017 budget was the highest in
the last 7years, allocating 150,000 hectares of land to boost cocoa, oil
palm and cassava product among others.
The First Lady added that the present
administration in Ondo State will close the gender gaps in the
agricultural sector as this will lead to job creation and provide more
incomes for women especially in the rural areas.
The
Women Farmers while reacting, appreciated the first lady for supporting
the initiative and urged her to use her office in pressurizing the
state government to give out loans to the women farmers.
The First Lady also inaugurated the Agric Gender
Friendly Policy Development Technical Working Group (TWG) that will
facilitate the development of an agriculture policy that is both
gender-friendly and inclusive for the State.
Arabinrin Akeredolu was also honoured as the cluster Advocacy Champion at the workshop.
