Scene of the accident

The “take it back” movement has commiserated with Lagos residents over the unfortunate fire incident that claimed many lives on Thursday.
The Director of Public Relations and Media of the movement, Rachel Onamusi-Kpiasi in a statement made available to THE PRECISION regretted that the incident would have been avoided if measures are put in place to checkmate indiscriminate movement of flammable liquids on Nigerian roads.
“Perhaps, soon, a day will come when we examine holistically how these avoidable tragedies can be mitigated against going forward. Maybe we will talk about the safe carriage of flammable liquids in roadworthy vehicles. Perhaps we will incorporate and uphold laws that ban tankers from lining up for days on the side of roads. It is clear that this is an accident many foresaw yet hoped fervently would never happen,” the statement read in part.

TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT COMMISERATES WITH LAGOSIANS AS TANKER FIRE RAGES

Our skies have been black for days; with tears, tragedy and death. Just today, a Mack tanker truck loaded with thirty-three litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) along the Otedola Bridge on Lagos-Ibadan expressway at about 5:23pm, fell and spilled its content on the road resulting into a fire outbreak.
Trapped in an impossible inferno, there are reports that close to a hundred vehicles have been involved in the blaze, and nine lives have been counted thus far as being lost.

Perhaps, soon, a day will come when we examine holistically how these avoidable tragedies can be mitigated against going forward. Maybe we will talk about the safe carriage of flammable liquids in roadworthy vehicles. Perhaps we will incorporate and uphold laws that ban tankers from lining up for days on the side of roads. It is clear that this is an accident many foresaw yet hoped fervently would never happen.
Today is, however, not that day. Today, we extend our sympathies to the residents, witnesses and victims’ families of the lives lost at Berger Bridge today. Today, we join Nigerians as we mourn even more death and grief in our nation and look forward to a day when these incidents will become a thing of the past.
We keep hope that our dear country can be reclaimed under a renewed and purposeful leadership responsible for the protection of lives and property. A leadership where basic infrastructure like good roads and an organised and efficient transport system will be guaranteed.
Till then, may the dead rest in peace. May the living find strength to bear the loss. May our land finally get the healing she so desperately deserves.
