Security Paramount To Effective Management Of Schools – Prof. Akinsolu

A 5-day SDGs National Training Programme Training for selected Principals of Federal Unity Schools in Nigeria was held from 2nd to 6th December, 2019 at the corporate headquarters of NIEPA Nigeria in Ondo Town.

The training which encapsulated topics and practical sessions in Emergency and Rapid response; Life Saving and First Aid; Community and School Relationship; Criminal Act; Public Emergencies; Hostel Emergencies and others security issues, aimed at providing the participants with the requisite knowledge on how to deal with the rise in conventional security issues.

Since assuming office, the Ag. Director General of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration Ondo, Akinsolu Olatoun Ph.D has actively promoted and mounted massive awareness campaigns at various fora on effective management of schools in Nigeria.

According to Professor Akinsolu at the workshop flag off, “all the aforementioned justify the need to empower all education practitioners including school level managers on effective school safety and security management. This will go a long way towards the effective implementation and sustainability of Education set-goals and objectives in States and in Nigeria as a whole”.

She concluded by adducing that, creating safe and supportive schools is critical to all education stakeholders and must be a national priority. School safety according to her, is not achieved with a single program or a piece of security equipment. Rather, effective school safety starts with prevention and sustained practices that will truly make our children and schools safe in all its entirety should be a major concern for all key actors and players of education.

Speaking also at the ceremony, Head of Training, NIEPA Nigeria Ondo, Dr. Sunday Adegbesan further added that, as a parastatal of government saddled with unique service of empowering education sector operators through the provision of specialized and relevant skills in planning, administration and management of education, NIEPA nevertheless co-operates and collaborates with relevant institutions in ensuring that managers of our public schools are well educated and protected from disasters. He explained that Police Force and security agencies from the Ministry of Interior (Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps) will be on ground to facilitate emergency response plans for managing security threats.

Adegbesan said that the management of school security is paramount to the effective management of schools and it is an issue that has attracted a great deal of attention and concern from learners, educators, parents, and the public at large.
