Usman Alkali Baba has been announced as the acting inspector-general (IG) of police, The Precision NG has learnt.

Minister of police affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, confirmed the development on Tuesday to state house correspondents at the presidential villa.

President Muhammadu Buhari had been on a medical vacation the UK, but didn’t transfer power to his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari’s directive came as erstwhile IG, Mohammed Adamu visited Imo state today to ascertain the level of damage, after gunmen overran the state’s security formations, including setting free of over 2000 prison inmates.

Alkali, who was a deputy inspector-general of police until his appointment, will replace Mohammed Adamu.

The president said Alkali’s appointment is with immediate effect.

Buhari had on February 4 extended the tenure of Adamu as the IGP for three months.

Adamu, who was appointed in 2019, had clocked the mandatory 35 years in service on February 1 and was expected to have been replaced by the president.
