The political train in Ondo state is on the move again. The announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently has also added to the momentum as key players in the political arena have started scheming.

One of the political parties in the state hoping to stage a come back is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Having ruled the state between 2003 and 2007 under former governor, Dr Olusegun Agagu and briefly in 2014 and 2015 when Dr Olusegun Mimiko decamped to the party, the PDP will be aiming to return to Alagbaka in February 2021 if it wins the October, 2020 guber election.

Recently, the Chairman of the party in the state, Clement Faboyede announced his decision to step down ahead of the party congresses in the 203 wards of the state in order to ensure transparency and fair play.

One of the key players in the PDP eyeing the coveted seat is Rt Hon. Alaba Lad-Ojomo.

Lad-Ojomo was a two-time member of the House of Representatives who represented Owo-Ose federal constituency between 2003 and 2011.

Aside the fact that he is a medical practitioner, Lad-Ojomo’s contributions in the political space is no doubt with his track records in the national assembly.

A prince from the Ojomo ruling family in Owo, Hon. Lad-Ojomo Chair-manned the house committees on Information and National Orientation; Legislative Budget and Research; MDGs, Banking and Currency, and Petroleum (upstream). That is not all, he also served as house committee member on Health, National Planning, Economic Development and Police Affairs. He was also the chairman governing council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic., Owo.

With the pedigree of Rt Hon Lad-Ojomo in Ondo state politics and particularly the Northern district of the state, he is at good stead to lead the PDP in the state.

Concerned PDP members in the state are of the view that the party must prevent a looming crisis as the party looks for a successor to the former Chairman, Clement Faboyede.

The group are of the view that since the chairmanship position has been zoned to the northern district of the state, Owo local government area should be considered for the position based on some political calculations.

Aside Lad-Ojomo who is from Owo LGA; Hon. Dennis Alonge from Ose LGA and Hon. Fatai Adams from Akoko Northwest LGA are also eyeing the state chairmanship position.

Various meetings were held recently by different groups aimed to see how a contestant could be persuaded to step down for another which has not yielded any favourable result.

From all indications, the race is between Owo and Ose LGAs, since Hon. Fatai Adams from Akoko Northwest has served in the capacity of Vice Chairman of the party for over 8 years during which he was deputy to the former chairman, Engr Faboyede.

For Ose LGA, Senator Bode Olajumoke is presently a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, an indication that Ose LGA should be left out of the calculation for the chairmanship position which Hon. Dennis Alonge is eyeing.

The concerned group in PDP however urged the party leaders in the state to look at the political resume of Rt Hon. Alaba Lad-Ojomo having hailed from Owo LGA.

According to them, the candidature of RT Hon. Lad-Ojomo is a rare one having been with the PDP since inception coupled with his experience in leadership capacities which they are optimistic shall bring remarkable development to the PDP in the state.
