Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics (ASUP), Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo Chapter, last week resolved to withdraw their services ahead of the second semester examination scheduled to commence this month.

Precision Online Newspaper reports that the Union members made the resolve after a congress on Tuesday, November 28, held at the Adekunle Ajasin Auditorium of the institution.

In a communique after the congress, the Union Chairman, Ade Arikawe and General Secretary, Victor Fapetu disclosed that the congress direct the Management of the institution to commence payment of promotion arrears of members of staff, which have remained unpaid since 2015 to date, starting from March 2023 salary.

“That the Union strongly demands the immediate payment of the remaining ten months outstanding salary arrears of staff before the commencement of second semester examination of 2022/2023 academic session.

“That failure to meet the above demands by Management, which are our legitimate rights, the Union would be constrained to withdraw its members from participating in the forthcoming Second Semester 2022-2023 examination scheduled to commence in December, 2023,” the communique read in part.

On the conversion of the institution to a University, the Union said it is not opposed to such laudable development, but would take a stand on the matter in due course.

“However, the Union is currently holding consultations with relevant stakeholders locally and nationally, and will soon communicate its position to the Government.

“Finally, the Union reiterates its commitment to harmonious Industrial relations and the progress of the Institution, also wishes the Council and Management a successful tenure,” the communique read.
