Borno Regional Editor of the Daily Trust newspapers, Uthman Abubakar, has been released by the Nigerian Army.

Recall that the Army had laid a siege to the headquarters and three other offices of the newspaper company following the publication of a report that was perceived to be against military intelligence.

The report detailed how the military assembled troops and equipment in preparation for a massive operation to retake Baga and five other towns in Borno from Boko Haram.

Twenty three staff members of the newspaper were subsequently taken for questioning by the military.

It, however, took the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari who ordered the military to end the siege.

“The Federal Government has directed the military to vacate the premises of @daily_trust and the order has been complied with,” presidential spokesman Garba Shehu tweeted late on Sunday.

“Issues between the military and the newspaper as they affect the coverage of the war in the Northeast will be resolved through dialogue.”
