Senate: PDP Candidates Beat Ajimobi, El-Rufai Deputy; Gombe Gov Knocked Out By APC

Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Monday failed to actualise his senatorial ambition as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kola Balogun, was declared the winner of the Oyo South senatorial district.

Mr Balogun defeated Gov. Ajimobi, of the All Progressive Congress, with a vote difference of 13,502.

Ajimobi is seeking to move to the Senate at the expiration of his second term as governor of Oyo State.

The returning officer of the district, Wole Akinsola who declared the result on Monday at the INEC collation centre in Ibadan North LGA, said the PDP candidate polled a total of 105,720 votes, while the candidate of the APC had 92,217 votes.

Mr Ajimobi had won in three of the local governments – Ibadan Southwest, Ibarapa Central and Ido, while Mr Balogun won the remaining six.

The six won by Mr Balogun are Ibadan North, Ibadan Northwest, Ibadan Northeast, Ibadan Southeast, Ibarapa North, Ibarapa East.

The incumbent senator representing the district, Soji Akanbi, who contested on the platform of ADC, finished behind the duo, in third place.

In another development, The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) senatorial candidate in Gombe North, Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo, has been defeated by Alhaji Sa’idu Alkali of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday’s National Assembly election.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gombe North Senatorial District has five Local Government Areas (LGAs); Nafada, Kwami, Gombe, Dukku, and Funakaye.

Dankwambo was defeated in four out of the five LGAs in the District including his LGAs which is Gombe.

Dr. Umar Gurama, the Returning Officer of Gombe North Senatorial District, announced the results at the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) office, the collation centre in Mallam Sidi, Kwami LGA.

Gurama declared Alkali winner of the election, having fulfilled the requirements of the law and scored the highest votes in Gombe North Senatorial District.

Alhaji Sa’idu Alkali of APC scored 152,546 votes to defeat Gov. Dankwambo of the PDP, who scored 88, 016 votes.

“In Kwami LGA, APC scored 26, 964 votes while the PDP scored 14, 105 votes.

“In Gombe LGA, APC scored 60, 934 votes against PDP’s 31, 106.

“In Dukku LGA, APC scored 26, 394 votes while the PDP, polled 13, 106 votes.

“In Funakaye LGA, APC scored 28, 544 votes against 17, 204 votes for PDP.”

However, Gov. Dankwambo won in Nafada LGA, scoring 12, 335 votes while APC scored 9,710 votes.

NAN also reports that Nafada is the hometown of the PDP governorship candidate, Sen. Usman Nafada of Gombe North Senatorial District.

Similarly, Sen. Danjauma La’ah (PDP-Kaduna South) has won the election for the Kaduna South Senatorial District.

Mr Suleiman Yashim, INEC Returning Officer who announced the result on Monday in Kafanchan said La’ah of the PDP scored a total 268,923 votes to defeat Deputy Governor Barnabas Bala Bantex of the APC who scored 133,287 votes.

Rijo Shikari of the ADP scored 9,609 votes, Benedict Kura of ADC scored 2,741.
