Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo representing Akoko North East/North West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has called for the mentoring of youths in the country to prepare them for leadership positions.
Tunji-Ojo, who is also the Chairman of House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), made the call while receiving the South West Caucus of the Nigerian Youth Parliament in his office on Wednesday.
According to him, lack of mentorship had drawn the region backward in producing young minds that could take over political leadership positions.
While encouraging the youths to leverage on their current position, he cautioned that they should seek mentors rather than godfathers.
He added that most youths ended up as activists or unionists without migrating into politics.
He said, “It is a leap you ought to climb. From here to the House of Assembly and to the House of Representatives and you continue to grow. That is the essence of youth parliament.
“If generations before us refused to mentor us, it will be unfair for us not to mentor people coming behind us.”
He assured that the House led by Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila was committed to youth development and would continue to play major roles in preparing the youths for the future.
Earlier, the Chairman of the caucus, Odunayo Akinyele, applauded the Reps member for the great feats he had achieved within the shortest time in the National Assembly.
