The governorship candidate of the PDP in Ondo state, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN on Wednesday escaped an assassination attempt while on his campaign tour to the palace of the Oloba of Oba Akoko, in Akoko South West LGA of the state.

Mr. Jegede was at the palace of the Oloba when the governor of Ondo state, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu SAN paid an unscheduled visit to the same location.

Mr. Akeredolu who was seen trying to canvass the people at the venue became angry when his entreaties was rebuffed by the people who responded to his trademark 4+4 hand signal with boos.

This angered the governor who immediately ordered his security details and thugs to disperse the crowds that had gathered at the venue. Shots were fired at the PDP candidate vehicles and scores of his supporters were injured as they scampered to safety.

The thugs who went on rampage, fired several shots at the candidates vehicle and tried to burn it down. They proceeded to attacking and harassing residents present while the governor left in the safety of his bullet proof vehicle.

Residents and eyewitnesses reported that it was the Governor that fired the first shot which was immediately followed by several gunshots for over 20 minutes by his thugs and aides.

Jegede who is currently safe, thanked God for the safety of his team and himself.

“It is a surprise that a senior member of the legal profession would resort to using violence in a bid to campaign for his reelection”, he said.

He called on the Department of State Services and the Police to investigate the attempt of his life and the callous action of the Governor.
