The vice chancellor of Achievers University Owo, Ondo state, Prof. Samuel Aje, says the institution is the first in any Nigerian varsity to give tuition-free scholarship to indigent students for three consecutive academic sessions.
Prof. Aje stated this while answering questions from newsmen in Owo on Monday during a press conference, organized as part of the activities marking the 10th convocation ceremony of the 14-year-old institution, holding on Saturday, April 24th.
While defending the idea behind the scholarship, Prof. Aje said the institution resorted to giving back to the people of the University community being mainly Agrarian.
“We believe that if a member of a family is educated, the effect would trickle down on other members of the family.
“This scholarship award arrangement offers an unprecedented opportunity to all intending students, particularly indigent who, under normal circumstances, would not have had the opportunity to enjoy this level of education in a private University.
“I join my voice to those of the beneficiaries in appreciating the Pro-chancellor and members of the governing council for this beautiful way in turning around the lives of the recipients and giving hope for a rewarding future,” Aje said.
The Precision NG reports that 255 students are currently benefitting from the scholarship, which is still open till the 15th of May, 2021.
