The chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Voting Council (NDVC), Prince Ade Omole met with Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), earlier today, June 8th, 2021, to compare notes on the ongoing National Assembly (NASS) Public Hearings on Nigeria Diaspora Voting (DV) and review the strategy to implement DV.
Both chairpersons expressed satisfaction with the ongoing NASS exercise and reiterated their commitments to ensuring that DV becomes a reality in Nigeria.
Prof Yakubu stated that INEC is ready to deploy its resources to DV as soon as the constitution is amended to give the agency the legal framework to commence required tasks. He further stressed that INEC has the capacity and expertise to execute the DV mandate when the constitutional barrier is removed by the legislature.
Prince Omole, accompanied by two NDVC board members, Dr. Badeji Lee and Professor Ali Alao, briefed the INEC Chairman on the public hearings attended across the country and the feedback received so far from stakeholders in each state. Omole thanked the electoral umpire boss for the agency’s support and guidance, especially with the drafting of the Diaspora Voting bill. Omole urged INEC to be steadfast, “realising that we are partners in progress, with a common commitment to Diaspora Voting in Nigeria”.
The duo agreed to work together more closely to strengthen the synergy for the benefit of Nigerians in the Diaspora.
