The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has called on new students of the Institution to contribute to the University’s quest to be the best in Africa by being innovative, studious and disciplined.

Prof. Ige made the call on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at the Matriculation Ceremony for the 2020/2021 academic session held in the University Multi-purpose Hall.

About five thousand new students from eight Faculties and the Postgraduate School took the Matriculation Oath at the ceremony.

He urged them to draw inspiration from various feats of students and graduates of the Institution, including Oluwadamilola Akintewe, a Law student who is among the finalists for the $100,000 Cheggord Global Student prize, and the development of a robotic dog by students of the University.

The VC said, “It is important to mention that Adekunle Ajasin University has become a potent boot camp for grooming confident and globally-competitive graduates who are distinguished in character and learning. In this direction, the previous and recent landmarks of our students and alumni continue to point to the University’s passion for academic excellence, self-reliance, and global impact.

“We cherish these modest achievements and guard them jealously. Indeed, we yearn for more. And we are confident that having admitted you through our merit-driven policy, we have opened the door for achieving more laurels and attaining our aspiration to be the best University in Nigeria, and among the best 10 in Africa.”

The Vice Chancellor warned against anti-social behaviors, saying offenders would be dealt with without fear or favour. He charged them to embrace ‘self-discipline, maintain a decent mode of dressing at all times, shun cultism and examination malpractice, be diligent in your studies, and comport yourself with dignity’.

He also cautioned them on the wrong use of social media, and advised them to approach concerned officers for explanations on grey areas, just as he assured them that the Management has put mechanisms in place to protect them during their studentship.

“Finally, as you officially become members of the University Community through the Matriculation Oath you took today, I advise you to eschew the doomed path of misconduct, criminality, and social vices so that your dreams of becoming responsible citizens and future leaders could be realized. The torch of knowledge we have committed into your hands today must not be blown off.”

The University Registrar, Mr. Gbenga Arajulu, had earlier administered the Matriculation Oath on the new students.
