OAUSTECH: Aworinde, Omowole Emerge New Deputy VC, Acting Registrar

The Governing Council at its 48th Regular Meeting held on Friday, 24th March, 2023 has approved the appointment of Prof. David Olaniran Aworinde as the second substantive Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH),     Okitipupa, Ondo State, Nigeria.

Prof. Aworinde, 55, who was born in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, attended Ori- Oke Baptist Primary School, Ogbomosho (1973-1979) and The Apostolic Grammar School, Ogbomosho (1979-1984), where obtained the First School Leaving Certificate (1979) and the West African School Certificate (1984). He obtained the Nigeria Certificate in Education in Biology/Chemistry from the Osun State College of Education, Ila- Orangun (1993), Bachelor of Science (Education) in Biology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (1998), and the University of Ibadan  where he earned a Master of Science (2002) and Doctor of Philosophy in (2009) respectively.

The new OAUSTECH Deputy Vice-Chancellor,  a professor of plant anatomy/taxonomy, is a member of the Botanical Society of Nigeria (BOSON) and the Nigerian Tropical Biology Association (NTBA).

Before joining the services of OAUSTECH in June 2011, Prof. Aworinde lectured at the University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State as Assistant Lecturer and Federal University of Technology (FUNAAB), Abeokuta, Ogun State as Lecturer II.
He joined the services of the University in June 2011 as Lecturer I,  rose to the position of Senior Lecturer in December, 2011, and appointed Reader in October, 2015. He was appointed a Professor in October, 2019.

Aside lecturing, Prof. Aworinde has served the University meritoriously in various capacities. He was Departmental Representative, OSUSTECH Research Grants Committee, member, Department of Biological Sciences Seminar Committee (2013 till date), Departmental Representative, Panel of Judges in the Inter- Departmental Debate Committee (2014), Acting H.O.D, Department of Biological Sciences (2015-2018), Representative, Students’ Welfare Board (2015-2018), Senate Representative Students’ Disciplinary Committee (2016-2018), member, University Central Research Laboratory Committee (2019), Congregation Representative,  University Search Committee for Appointment of Vice-Chancellor (2021), Chairman, School of Science Board of Studies & Board Examiners (2021-2023), member, University Appointment and Promotion Committee (Academics),  member, University Strategic Plan Committee (2022-2023), Chairman, Campus Beautification Committee, (2022 till date), Chairman , University PalmTree Plantation Conflict Resolution Committee (2022 till date), Dean, School of Science and Chairman, Committee of Deans from 2021 until his new appointment.

He was member, Implementation Committee on the Establishment of FUNAAB Dignitaries Garden, member, Environmental Impact Assessment of Olumo Rock Resort Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, member, Environmental Impact Assessment and Establishment of Botanical Gardens of Ladoke Akintola University, (LAUTECH), Ogbomossho, Oyo State and member, Environmental Impact Assessment and Establishment of Botanical Garden of Federal College of Education, Oyo, Oyo State to mention few.

Prof. Aworinde has published and co-published over 35 research papers in learned academic journals and he is External Examiner, Higher Degree Examination of the Postgraduate College, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria from 2019 till date.

As an hardworking, industrious and diligent academic and administrator, Prof. Aworinde has won several awards, recognition and commendation. Collection of ornamental and rare plants, as well and reading and research are his topmost extra curricular activities.

Prof. Aworinde is happily married and blessed with children.

His appointment takes effect from 27th March, 2023 for a term of two years in the first instance.

In a similar development, the Governing Council of
OAUSTECH has approved the appointment of Mr. Idowu Omowole as Acting Registrar.

Mr. Omowole, 50, from Mahintedo in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, attended L.A. Primary School, Ode-Mahin (1977-1982), Mahin Community High School (1982-1984), Methodist High School, Okitipupa (1984-1987), Technology Education Centre, Lagos (1987-1988), University of Ibadan (1993-1998) & (2000-2003). Mr. Omowole holds a  Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy/Political Science (1998) and a Master of Arts in Philosophy (2003) both from the University of Ibadan in addition to the West Africa School Certificate (1988) and First School Leaving Certificate (1982). 

He is a member of professional bodies: Association of Nigeria Professional Administrator (ANUPA) and Association of University Administrators (AUA) UK.

Before he joined the services of the University in 2009, the Acting Registrar had previously worked with the Federal Ministry of Labour, Federal Secretariat, Akure, Ondo State as Labour Officer (2001-2009).

Mr. Omowole served the University in various capacities and held various administrative positions since he joined the services of the University.  He was Senior Assistant Registrar, Academic Affairs Office (2009-2011), Students’ Affairs Officer (2011-2016), Principal Assistant Registrar, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, (2016-2017), Principal Assistant Registrar, Academic Affairs (2017-2019), Registry Coordinator & Secretary to Council (2019-2020), Deputy Registrar, Council Affairs (2020-2021), & Secretary, OAUSTECH PG School from 2021 until his appointment.

He was a chairman, Association of Nigerian Professional Administrators (ANUPA), OAUSTECH Chapter.

Mr.  Omowole, who enjoys playing football and listening to jazz music, has authored two books, namely: Saving the Labouring Child in Nigeria and Innocence Interrupted.

Mr. Omowole is married and blessed with children.

His appointment as Acting Registrar of OAUSTECH took effect from 3rd April, 2023 following the resignation of the former Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu Oke Saliu, who was appointed as the Registrar of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.
