The Commissioner who represented Ondo State on the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Hon. Gbenga Edema, says the emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a testament to Nigeria’s resurgence as the giant of Africa.

Edema, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Dr. Tob Loko, extended his warmest congratulations to President Tinubu on his emergence.

The erstwhile lawmaker, who harped on the significance of the achievement, stated that it reaffirmed Nigeria’s position as a dominant force in Africa.

President Tinubu’s new position as the ECOWAS Chairman was announced at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government on June 19, 2023, in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

Edema said: “Nigeria’s selection of President Bola Tinubu as the Chairman of ECOWAS is a momentous occasion for our great nation. It signifies Nigeria’s return to the forefront of African affairs and highlights our renewed commitment to fostering regional cooperation and progress.”

Edema further stressed that with Tinubu’s vast political acumen, diplomatic finesse, and deep understanding of regional dynamics, Nigeria is poised to contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of West Africa.

He called upon Nigerians to rally behind the President and support his efforts to advance the regional agenda, and urged citizens to embrace the spirit of unity, cooperation, and inclusivity as Nigeria assumes a pivotal role within the ECOWAS community.

“President Tinubu’s leadership will undoubtedly enhance Nigeria’s engagement with our West African neighbours, foster peace and stability, and provide a platform for economic growth and prosperity for all member states.”

In the statement, Edema also highlighted the potential benefits that Tinubu’s appointment could bring to Nigeria’s economy.

He expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to leverage his position to attract foreign investments, forge stronger trade ties, and facilitate collaboration among ECOWAS member states.

Edema maintained that Nigeria is poised to make substantial contributions to regional integration, economic growth, and stability, thereby solidifying its position as a key player in West Africa and beyond.
