Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr Faruk Umar Abubakar says for Nigeria to attain greatness, investment in the education sector is key.

Abubakar stated this in Owo on Friday during the convocation lecture of Achievers University, while speaking on the topic, “Education as a Tool for Social Change and Justice in Nigeria.”

The NMCN boss noted that there is a connection between education and social change.

“Education comes first before social change, and effective social change can only occur with sound education. All sectors of the economy need to initiate reforms in education in various endeavors to achieve social change and justice in the country.

“Education is a potent tool for Human development; Social change and progress; Economic development; Improving the quality of life of people and Emancipation and freedom,” he said.

Dr Abubakar further noted that the complexity of social change and justice can be addressed using education as a tool.

“Education equips individuals with knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities, enabling them to make informed choices and advocate for their rights. By providing quality education to marginalized and disadvantaged communities, individuals can escape the cycle of poverty and gain the tools they need to improve their lives.

“Education can promote tolerance and understanding between various ethnic, religious, and cultural groups in a multicultural nation like Nigeria. To lessen the possibility of ethnic and religious conflicts, schools can play a part in teaching the values of diversity, respect, and unity in a multicultural society.

“People with more education are more likely to access healthcare services and make educated decisions about their health. This can result in better health outcomes. Encouraging health education can result in better lives and fewer problems with public health,” he said.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Omolola Irinoye noted that Nigeria needs to do more to educate its people in order to compete with countries with technological advancements.

Also, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University, Dr Bode Ayorinde stressed that education help the society to grow, adding that the education of the girl child is important.

“Education is a transformational agenda, not only for white collar jobs, but for the progress of the society, for a social change and the development of the country.”

Highlight of the event was the decoration of Dr Ayorinde as the grand patron of the Man O’ war, Achievers University chapter.
