Progressive Youths in Akoko North West local government area of Ondo state have demanded to be allowed to complete their 4-year term in the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives seat for Akoko North East/ Akoko North West Federal constituency became vacant after the resignation of the former occupier who is now the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The youths in the local government made this known at a solidarity rally organized to sensitive the people of the constituency on the need to embrace fairness by allowing Akoko North West local government finish the mandate given to them at the polls during the 2023 General elections before Tunji-Ojo was appointed as a Minister.
They pleaded with the people of the sister local government, Akoko North East local government to support their bid to retain the seat since they (Akoko North East local government) already has the Senate seat.
Speaking on behalf of the over 1,000 youths who joined the rally, a leader of the concerned youth leaders in Akoko North West local government, Abiola Mayowa stressed that have no reason to go head to head with the other local government since they already conceded the seat to them at the polls.
According to him, “We don’t have any reasons to fight our people in Akoko North East local government area as we keep a smooth relationship with them. On this issue of the vacant House of Representatives seat in our constituency, it is very clear that the seat has been conceded to us for the next four years in Akoko North West local government area and in turn, we supported them for the Senate seat which they currently occupy.
“We are organizing this rally to educate our people and also secure the support of our people in the other local government area. We are sure they will support us.”
One of the foremost leader in Akoko North West local government area and a former Senior Special Assistant to Ondo state Governor, Evangelist Olumuyiwa Asagunla also noted that the two local government areas in the Federal constituency are brothers and should have no need to go to war
“We are brothers in the two local government areas and we believed our people in the other local government area will take the easy decision to allow us finish the mandate the trusted us with.
“We have two elective positions in the Federal constituency. They already took the Senate in Akoko North East local government area, we should be allowed to finish the House of Representatives mandate given to us freely by the people.”
The event had in presence, political leaders, religious leaders, community leaders and youth leaders across various communities in the local government area.
