Victor Osimhen on Friday evening scored a brace as the Super Eagles moved one step closer towards reviving their World Cup Qualification bid with an impressive 2-0 win over Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle fielded an attacking lineup, featuring Stanley Nwabali in goal, a defensive quartet of skipper William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel, and a midfield duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi. The attacking force included Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Osimhen.

Chelle’s attacking strategy paid off in the 11th minute when Victor Osimhen scored with a brilliant finish at the back post, after Ademola Lookman’s well-floated cross from a freekick, to give the Super Eagles a much-needed lead.

Victor Osimhen struck again just before halftime, controlling a header from Samuel Chukwueze, before racing clear and lobbing the goalkeeper to double the Super Eagles’ lead. With the damage already done, Osimhen came off in the 77th minute for Tolu Arokodare who came on for his Super Eagles debut.

The 2-0 win means the Super Eagles have now claimed six points, lifting them to fourth place in the table, ahead of Lesotho, who also lost to South Africa 2-0. Meanwhile, Rwanda remain third with seven points.

Next up, the Super Eagles host Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on March 25, seeking another win. Meanwhile, Rwanda host Lesotho on the same day, aiming to bounce back from their loss.
