A Professor of Mass Communication, Tokunbo Alex Adaja, will on Thursday, May 8 deliver the 11th Inaugural Lecture of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State.
According to the Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Professor Festus Epetimehin, the event will hold at the Oba Oladele Olashore Auditorium at 1PM.
The lecture, titled “Power of the Press and Press of Power: Bridging the Lacuna in the Quest for Good Governance,” will be delivered under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor of JABU, Professor Olasebikan Fakolujo.
Professor Adaja earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Ibadan (1988), a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos and a Master of Arts in Communication and Language Arts from the University of Ibadan. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State.
Between 1989 and 2003, he served in many public and private organisations, including the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission, Vanguard Yellow Pages, Nigerian Tribune and The Guardian Newspapers.
He began his academic career in 2003 at the Department of Mass Communication, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State. There, he served in various capacities, including as Chairman of the OOU Radio Board, Member of the University Senate, Head of Department of Mass Communication and Chairman of the Curriculum Committee overseeing the transition of Mass Communication from the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences.
Professor Adaja joined the services of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in 2017 and was appointed a full Professor in the Department of Mass Communication in 2019. He’s the first to attain that rank in the department.
Currently serving as the Dean of the College of Postgraduate Studies, he has held several other leadership roles, including Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Lecture Timetable and Examinations, Chairman of the University Examination Malpractice Committee, Member of the Curriculum Development Committee and Member of the University Senate.
He has served as an assessor for professorial appointments (Associate Professors and Professors) for various Nigerian universities and as an external examiner for PhD and Master’s degree students across the country.
With over 50 scholarly publications in both local and international outlets, including Scopus-indexed journals, Professor Adaja is the Editor-in-Chief of the JABU International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences. He also reviews for numerous reputable journals and has published articles on national issues in many Nigerian newspapers.
Prof. Adaja has supervised more than 50 postgraduate students (PhD, MA/MSc, and PGD) and over 100 undergraduate students. Additionally, he has frequently served as a National Universities Commission (NUC) Resource Person both as team leader and member during Accreditation and Resource Verification exercises across Federal, State and Private universities in Nigeria.
