The All Progressives Congress National Youth Leader, Ismaeel Ahmed, on Monday described the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria as necessary in order to make the blue bird social media platform more responsible.
Ahmed while speaking to newsmen on Monday, said although he’s not happy that Nigerians youth who are the major users on the platform are being denied access to it currently, it is important to checkmate Twitter activities.
“The government did not ban social media; Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other social media platforms are still in operation. There was a suspension but I’m sure there is a conversation going on between the government and the representatives of Twitter and I’m sure it will be resolved.
“We as young people, our job is to represent our constituency and plead to those who would come to amicable resolution on this, if you ask me as Ismaeel Ahmed, I’m okay with the suspension of a non legal entity in Nigeria who sees nothing wrong in bringing down the Tweet of a president without the recourse of a conversation with government representatives.
“I think once in a while, government needs to show that it is a sovereign nation and no company that does not have any legal personality in Nigeria would do to it as it pleases. I’m not I happy that I cannot twit presently, I hope there would be amicable resolution and I hope that Twitter will be responsible going forward and Nigerian government will also take it easy with them.” Ahmed said.
Responding to the question on if the forthcoming maiden APC Progressives Youth Conference is showcasing Nigerian youths to take over leadership in 2023, Ismaeel said:
“I never subscribed to the idea of edging anyone out, I think democracy is and should be a game of the majority and the young people are in the majority. You can have the minority have their say but the majority should have their way. It is in human nature by itself to know that the person who is ahead of you should know better than you.
We are very appreciative of our older people, but like I always said and even to the president himself, that “giving young people opportunity is not only a favour, it’s a strategy.”
“When you have the opportunity to teach him, teach him well. Leadership will come to us, it’s just a matter of time, how well we do when it comes to us depends on how well we are trained when they had the opportunity to train us, so we are not edging anybody out, we are just saying that let’s put our hands together and be able to build a very virile and a prosperous Progressives party and nation at large”
The Youth conference scheduled for Monday June 21 will be at the International Conference Center, Abuja and progressives youth delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT are expected.
To participate in the conference, youths are encouraged to log on to the official website of the conference www.pyc21.ng and register. The website goes live today and registration is opened till Saturday June 19, 2021
