The University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital ( UNIMEDTH), Ondo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Wesley University, Ondo for collaboration in the areas of provision of clinical extern postings for certain categories of their medical students and allied health programmes.
Akinjide Oluwatope, Head, Media and Publicity, UNIMED Teaching Hospital in a press release on Thursday reports that the Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Michael Gbala, described the partnership as a positive development towards ensuring the Nigeria healtth sector is populated with more trained health personnel that would mitigate unending “Japa Syndrome” in the country.
According to him, the collaboration is a win-win benefits to both Institutions and the entire healthcare professional practice in the State at large.
The Vice-chancellor of Wesley University, Prof. Samuel Obeka expressed his delight towards the friendly disposition of the management of the Hospital at entering into an MoU with Wesley University. He said the collaboration will engender an enduring advancement of health related programmes of the school.
He further lend his voice to the fact the readiness to open doors for exchange of skills expertise among cognate Institutions in the training of healthcare workers will help to address shortage of healthcare professionals which had almost crippled quality healthcare services in Nigeria and in other African sub-Saharan nations.
The VC expatiated on the merits of the relationship, saying it would increase students enrollment. More so, considering the proximity of the two institutions in terms accessibility for their students. He added that with the quality of available human resource and infrastructures at UNIMEDTH, it has an advantage to place Wesley University on a unique pedestal to start turning out well-groomed Medical graduates that could be capable enough to compete effectively with their contemporaries around the world.
Earlier, the Acting Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Ayodeji Akinbodewa said it is a good step in the right direction, saying the MoU would go along way to birth more medical doctors that would benefit all and sundry.
He added that, it would create a platform for exchange of ideas between the institutions which would assist to harvest hybrid of information that could help State Government to formulate policies and implementing decisions.
