Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) Ondo State on Sunday gave the state government and the university governing council seven(7) days ultimatum to announce date of resumption for the 2017/2018 academic session.
The university governing council has also responded to the ultimatum assuring that date of resumption would be announced in due course.
It will be recalled that the institution has been on protracted break over the last 80 days following the inability of the state government to make known the new tuition fee to be paid in the institution.
The state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had confirmed that the fee payable in the institution would be increased in view of the current economic realities in the state
The Students Union President, Comrade Ijanusi Olawale in a statement said the ultimatum became necessary as a result of the nonchalant attitude of the state government.
He accused the government of toying with the students future ,saying the alleged indecisiveness of government is bringing untold hardship on the students.
The statement read: “Today makes it 80days that we have been made to sit at home since the 2016/2017 academic session ended.
“It is quite pathetic and sardonic that the government has been quite undisturbed by this disheartening predicament.
“The government has been so unperturbed by the fact that we are wallowing and wasting away at home.We have wasted a whole semester at home doing nothing.
“The hope of our 500L Law students going to Law School is now hanging in the wind.
“We are made to go through all this unpalatable rigours all because of the unfortunate indecisiveness of the government.
“We have been silent enough. We will not allow the administration of the government to toy with our future. We have been pushed to the wall, and it is now highly sacrosanct, germane and imperative to take our destiny into our hands.
“On this note, we are strongly giving out 7 working days ultimatum to the government and also to the governing council of AAUA, to facilitate all necessary necessities to bring about the resumption of AAUA.This ultimatum count down shall kickstart on monday, 2nd of April 2018.
“Failure of the government and the governing council to do the needful will draw the wrath of the Nigerian students.
“As we will be left with no choice than to take the centre stage.”
When contacted by The Politico, the chairman of AAUA governing council, Dr. Tunji Abayomi said the Institution would meet up and resume before the ultimatum elapses
“We hope to meet the ultimatum,” Abayomi confirmed.
