NUC Accredits UNIMED’s Nursing, Physiotherapy Programmes

The University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo City, Ondo State has obtained full accreditation to run Nursing Science and Physiotherapy programmes, The Precision NG can understand.

The Precision NG recalled that the National Universities Commission (NUC), with the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all Nigerian Universities, visited UNIMED in the last quarter of 2019 as the University had run the programmes for two academic sessions following the initial approval by the Commission.

Temitope Oluwatayo of the Public Relations Department of the University in a statement noted that the Executive Secretary, NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, in a letter addressed to the Governor of Ondo State and Visitor to the University, revealed that Nursing Science scored 80.5 percent while Physiotherapy got 81.9 percent during the accreditation exercise.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi described the accreditation as another laudable milestone in the history of UNIMED, the first medical University in Nigeria.

He however noted that the University is not simply interested in obtaining accreditation of programmes but focused on provision of excellent medical education that can be rated among the best in the world.

Prof. Fatusi appreciated all members of staff in the accredited departments and the entire University community for imbibing the culture of teamwork as well as dedication to duty.

The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the Visitor to the University and Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN for his commitment and unflinching support to the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

Prof. Fatusi said new medical courses will be introduced as soon as possible since the University has the vision of providing education and training in all health related services.

So far, 13 out 14 programs offered by the University have gained the accreditation of the National Universities Commission.

Medical Laboratory Science will be mature for accreditation by November 2020, after two academic sessions, a requirement by the Commission.
