The wife of the Chief Imam of Ayere community in Ijumu local government area of Kogi state, Mrs Yemisi Baderu, has been murdered by suspected traditionalists.
The Precision NG gathered that the woman was murdered at her house in the presence of her husband and grown up children while her five months baby laid beside her on the night the assailants attacked her with a cutlass.
Our correspondent further gathered from close associates of the Imam and husband of the late nursing mother, that the traditionalists had threatened to wipe away the family due to the preachings of the Imam which they say is against their activities and beliefs.
Additional report obtained from Jatto 107.2 FM in the state revealed that authorities in the town including the King and the Nigeria Police force have swung into action by apprehending the perpetrators.
The traditional ruler of the town and the Alayere of Ayere, Oba Jo Olubo, who expressed shock and sadness over the incident, pleaded with the police not to release those held over the crime until thorough investigation and prosecution is done.
The Chairman, Senior Special Assistant on security to Kogi state government in charge of Ijumu local government, Taufiq Isa, visited the community on Saturday and condemned the attack, describing it as heartless and brutal.
Hon. Isa noted that the incident was the first of its kind in the local government as he assured the residents, of government’s commitment to restore peace and order in the community.
Confirming the incident to Jatto 107.2 FM, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Willy Aya said authorities have arrested Three suspects connected with the attack and that an investigation has begun.
The Precision NG also put a call to the PPRO, but all proved abortive.
Meanwhile, a 7pm – 7am curfew has been imposed in the community in a bid to bring other perpetrators to book.
