As part of its Community Service mandate, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State has commenced moves to mitigate the incessant accidents in its host community.

This was disclosed on Monday when the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige led top Management staff and other senior officers to pay a condolence visit to the monarch, the Alale of Akungba, Oba Sunday Adeyeye.

Prof. Ige said the Institution has set up a Committee headed by the Dean of Post Graduate School, Prof. C. A. Daramola with the mandate to come up with workable solutions to mitigate the incessant accidents in the town. The Committee has two weeks to submit its report.

He said copies of the report would be made available to the palace, the state government, and other relevant stakeholders.

The Acting Vice Chancellor commiserated with the monarch on the loss of lives in the unfortunate accident involving a truck that rammed into a roadside market on Saturday, killing many and leaving scores of others with varying degrees of injuries.

Responding, the Alale of Akungba, Oba Sunday Adeyeye thanked the University for identifying with its host community in the trying time and for doing what was expected of the Institution by proffering solutions to problems in the locality.

He disclosed that 22 persons died in the incident while 18 others are battling for their lives in various hospitals located in the area.

He added that he suggested to the Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, when he visited the town that an alternative road through Akungba town to Simerin-Oka Akoko be built. The suggested five-kilometer road completely by-passes the treacherous slopes of Akungba and Oke-Oka mountains.

He also said that his palace has ordered the immediate relocation of all roadside markets to the inner market, while calling on the state government to erect wire mesh fence to prevent recalcitrant traders from coming back.

Present at the event were the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francis Gbore; the Acting Registrar, Mr. Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa; Dean of Post Graduate School, Prof. C. A. Daramola; the University Library Coordinator, Mr. Tunde Ademodi, among other officers.
