The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka has named the Distance Learning Centre Administrative Building of the institution after the Chairman of Council and Pro-Chancellor, NDE Joshua Waklek.
This development is coming less than 48hrs to the end of the tenure of the VC.
Recall that the selection process of Olayinka’s successor has been enmeshed in controversies, forcing the federal government to intervene by directing that Mr Waklek appoint an acting VC to oversee the institution for the next Six months.
“On the recommendation of the Joint Council/Senate Committee on Naming of Buildings and Streets, which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, the new administrative building of the Distance Learning Centre along Sasa Road, has been named after the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Nde Joshua Mutka Waklek, mni.
“This is a honour most deserving to an experienced public servant. An alumnus of the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom and of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos, Nde Waklek is an accountant by profession,” Olayinka says in a statement on Saturday after the inauguration of the building.
Critics of the VC have however alleged that the naming of the building after the Chairman of Council, NDE Waklek is an attempt at inducing him to do his (VC) bidding.
