In the face of economic, health and security challenges that plague our everyday life in Nigeria, it would have been un-necessary to comment on the present membership revalidation exercise of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with its attendant violence, condemnation and trickery.
However, it is difficult to ignore the reverberating echoes of the illegality of the Mai Mala Buni led National Caretaker Committee, as it has resurfaced again.
In the Election Petition filed at the Ondo State Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal by Eyitayo Jegede, SAN the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, the impropriety of Buni a serving Governor to sign the Nomination of Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN was first raised.
It is a matter for the respected panel of three Judges to determine whether or not Buni trampled on the 1999 Constitution (as Amended) by performing the role of National Chairman of the APC as provided by law. Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor Osun State, and the pioneer Chairman of the National Interim Committee of APC has lampooned Buni’s Committee as unconstitutional.
According to Chief Akande, disgrace is the predictable end of such a handpicked committee. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National leader of the APC also unconditionally endorsed Chief Akande’s position and went ahead to dismiss the revalidation exercise as a huge waste of time and resources. Across the entire country, the exercise once again demonstrated the lack of capacity of APC led Government to deliver on any assignment, let alone to govern a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria with her diversities.
In Ondo State, meetings preparatory to the revalidation exercise were marred with gun shots, cutlasses and axes. If only they realise that this whole exercise will end in disgrace like Chief Akande predicted, they would have saved themselves the troubles. The story was the same in Kwara, Oyo, Kaduna and many other States where political gladiators tried themselves for size.
While Mai Mala Buni, working in league with Yahaya Bello target 100 million members, everywhere he goes, it is reverberations of his unconstitutional Caretaker Committee that rent the air.
