It is no longer news that the highest payable fees at the University of Medical Science, Ondo is N2.4 million for clinics students who are non-indigenes.
See below a copy of the new fees regime as obtained from UNIMED’s website:
The management has however clarified the implication of the new fees regime.
A statement on Thursday by Temitope Oluwatayo of the Public Relations unit of the institution made available to The Precision NG, stated that the new fees regime recently approved by the Council of the University only applied to students that would be admitted for the 2021/2022 session (freshers) and not for old or returning students.
“Thus, current students of the University have little or no reason to be worried as the School Management had earlier discussed
this with the Parents’ Forum at its meeting on October 27, 2021.

“The cost of training students in health-related fields is the highest among all disciplines in Nigeria and globally as it is highly intensive in human resources, equipment, and related facilities. With
the recent depreciating value of Naira, the economic burden of training students in the health related fields has escalated considerably as virtually all equipment needed are produced overseas. Thus, it is not possible to maintain quality training without a significant rise in revenue.
“More than any other type of tertiary institution, the burden of such escalated cost of training weighs more on a university like ours, which is a specialised medical and health sciences training institution. The actual cost of training students in the medical professions and related health
fields is far higher than the newly approved school fees. Without the continuous funding support from the Ondo State government, the new school fees would have been much higher than what the University Council approved.
“The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, as Nigeria’s first specialized Medical and Health Sciences University, has a strong and uncompromising focus on high-quality training. We strongly believe that it will be a great disservice to our students, their parents and guardians, our nation and the global community to compromise the quality of our training on any ground.
“To achieve our mission of providing education and training that is of exceptional quality across all health related disciplines, the University needs to maintain training and research facilities at an optimal level, and continuously expand these facilities with new acquisitions.
“The University authority strongly appeals to all parents and guardians of our students to dialogue with their wards and encourage them not to engage in any activities that would result in the disruption of the University calendar and negatively impact their training.
“The University Management, under the leadership of Professor Adesegun Fatusi, is irrevocably committed to the welfare and development of all UNIMED students and will continuously strive to ensure an optimal training environment necessary to produce high-quality graduates,” the statement read.
