Akure speaking communities on Saturday kicked off a three billion naira medical unit project in support of the teaching hospital of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
The Olu of Ilu Abo, Chief Olu Falae in his welcome address, expressed delight over the commencement of the project.
Chief Falae promised to support the project with financial and material resources.
Dr Femi Oyinsan, Chairman, Central Planning Committee, said the project will be formally launched in the first quarter of 2024.
He said the indigenes of Akure at home and abroad are interested in the actualization of the project.
Also speaking, the Chair, project sub committee, Chief Femi Bello disclosed that the medical unit will have 12 departments.
He said the building is a world class one, adding that the brief was supplied by FUTA.
Bello who added that the medical unit building will have an underground, elevator and ramps, noted that the construction is the first phase, while the equipment that would be used at the facility would come as second phase.
The Deji of Akure, HIM Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, Odundun II in his address, called for a united Akure land in actualizing the project.

He urged traditional rulers in Akure south, Akure north and Ifedore to unite to achieve the success.
The Deji who decried the non existence of a teaching hospital in Apure, the Ondo State capital, added that the project must not fail. He promised to support the project with material resources.
The representative of the FUTA VC, the deputy Vice Chancellor – Development, Prof. Sunday Oluyamo noted that the institution is happy with what the Akure speaking communities have embarked upon.
He said the medical unit is a prerequisite for the accreditation of the teaching hospital as mentioned by the MDCN team during their recent visit to FUTA.
The highlight of the event was the official Turning of sod supervised by the Deji of Akure and Olu of Ilu Abo, Chief Falae.
Notable Chiefs in Akure south, Akure north and Ifedore were present at the event.
