The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, has emphasised the need for a genuine commitment to the ideals of democracy, the rule of law, and good governance as essential pillars for building an egalitarian society.

Dr. Ajulo delivered this call to action on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, during the 25th Founders’ Day lecture of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, titled, “Democracy, Rule of Law, and Good Governance”.

The Guest Speaker said, “As we celebrate 25 years of academic excellence at Adekunle Ajasin University, let us commit ourselves to the ideals of democracy, the rule of law, and good governance; let our actions reflect teachings from diverse cultural and spiritual traditions, fostering a society where every voice is heard, justice prevails, and leaders serve with integrity.”

In his presentation, Dr. Ajulo described democracy as a governance system that entrusts power to the people through free and fair elections, protection of individual rights, and active citizen participation. He further emphasised the interplay between leadership and followership in achieving good governance, noting that unreasonable demands by followers could lead to compromised leadership.

He explained, “All hands must be on deck to attain good governance, the essence of leadership which is the purport of democracy and rule of law. Therefore, good followership is key to good leadership. In situations where some followers make unreasonable and selfish demands from leaders, it engenders compromised leadership. Therefore, democracy and rule of law must have their output in the good of the people in form of good governance. Democracy and the rule of law must culminate in good governance. This is the ultimate expression of leadership, which serves the people’s collective interest and upholds justice and equity.”

Dr. Ajulo lauded the progress made by AAUA over the years, commending its transformative journey. “The story of AAUA epitomizes a tale of progress and growth, transforming from initial struggles into a remarkable academic institution that stands as a beacon of higher learning in Nigeria. Its modern infrastructure, innovative programs, and vibrant intellectual community are a testament to visionary leadership.”

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, remarked that the silver jubilee celebration offered a moment to reflect on the University’s remarkable achievements and heritage.

Prof. Ige said, “I am filled with immense pride and deep gratitude. Since its inception, our institution has remained steadfast in pursuing the noble vision and mission laid down by our founding fathers: to be a premier university dedicated to developing self-reliant individuals committed to service. We have consistently upheld these ideals through groundbreaking research, knowledge creation, character development, and service to humanity.”
