The governing council of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) says it has commenced the process of appointing a new vice chancellor (VC) for the Ondo state owned varsity.
Speaking to The Precision NG in a telephone chat at the weekend, the Chairman of the Council, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, said there are 20 contestants within and outside the university that would be screened.
“There would be a new VC. We have started the process. There are 20 contestants and we’re working on picking the best from the list,” he said.
Abayomi, who is also the pro chancellor of the institution, added that the current tenure of the Acting VC, Prof. Olugbenga Ige ends by July, 2021, and that he won’t get an extension.
“He won’t get an extension in acting capacity for the fourth term, except the acting VC makes it through the interview process. A new VC would resume,” Abayomi disclosed.
The Precision NG reports that Prof. Olugbenga Ige was appointed on January 6, 2020 as Acting Vice Chancellor for a period of six months.
He was reappointed on July 7, 2020 and January 7, 2021 for the second and third term respectively.
In July, 2019, the University advertised the position of the VC, six months to the expiration of the tenure of the then VC, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun.
The process of appointing a successor to Ajibefun was however thwarted, following the discontentment in many quarters within the institution over the exercise.
Consequently, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, ordered the suspension of the exercise.
The Precision NG gathered that the directive followed a series of protests alleging that the exercise was being conducted to favour some particular candidates.
One of the reasons for the suspension, it was gathered, was the alleged plan by some powerful forces outside the university to impose their own candidates as VC of the institution.
The allegations were, however, denied by the chairman of council, Dr. Abayomi.
