Teachers’ Capacity: Ekiti State Government Collaborates With NIEPA

In a recent development, the Ekiti State government has partnered with the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo to organize a 3-day capacity building workshop for head teachers of public primary schools.

In an elaborate opening ceremony that took place at the Government Technical College, Ado-Ekiti, where the Governor’s wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, declared the workshop open. The Ekiti State First Lady emphasized the crucial role education plays in national growth and prosperity, encouraging teachers to take full advantage of the training programme, stressing the importance of cascading knowledge to benefit others and contribute to the overall development of the education system. Her Excellency also noted that quality education is fundamental to a nation’s growth, as it nurtures individual potential, creates a skilled workforce, and drives economic and social development.

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (EKSUBEB), Professor Femi Akinwunmi, commended the Governor, His Excellency Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, for creating an enabling environment and prioritizing teachers’ welfare. He eulogized the Governor for his interest in the welfare of teachers across the board, especially primary school teachers. Professor Akinwumi noted that Governor Biodun Oyebanji recently approved the promotion of primary school teachers in the state from grade level 15 to 16 and also prioritized the training of Ekiti State teachers to deliver quality education effectively. He described NIEPA Ondo as the best when it comes to capacity building of the education sector workforce, having been tested and trusted severally.

Representing the Acting Director-General of NIEPA, Dr. David Shofoyeke, the Head of the Training and Research Department, Dr. Samson Oyeromi, in his goodwill message, commended the Ekiti State government for its commitment to teacher development and education. He emphasized the importance of continuous capacity building for teachers, highlighting NIEPA’s role in providing research-based training programmes to enhance teacher effectiveness. Dr. Oyeromi encouraged Ekiti State government not to relent in patronizing NIEPA’s programmes, especially its Annual Training Programme (ATP), which saw the induction of Education Instructors from the Nigerian Air Force Schools into the body of Educational Administration professionals last year.

Other dignitaries who delivered goodwill messages include the Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs.) K.O.O. Aderiye and the Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Professor Joseph Ayodele, urged teachers to upgrade themselves, be friendly, and cooperate with the government to ensure the education system thrives.

The workshop sessions which focused on the professionalization of teaching, took place simultaneously across three centers in the state: Ado-Ekiti, Ikere Ekiti, and Ido-Ekiti. The NIEPA team led by Dr. Oyeromi, included seasoned facilitators such as Dr. Ṣeun Yusuf and other experienced personnel from the Institute.
