The National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA NIGERIA), Ondo State, has trained fifty-two (52) principals drawn from the three zones in Kogi state on “Leadership and School Control”.

The four (4) day training for the principals which held from 9th to 12th April, 2019, took place in the main auditorium of B View Hotels and Suites, Lokongoma, Lokoja.

NIEPA’s Director-General, Prof. Lilian Salami, represented by its Abuja liaison office coordinator, Dr. David Shofoyeke, said, the capacity building training workshop organized for Principals of Public Secondary Schools in Kogi State aimed at taking a broad look at leadership and school discipline, school law, school maintenance, conflict management, communication process, decision making and how these can best contribute to achieving effective school control.

Shofoyeke mentioned that the training set out to achieve objectives such as enhancing principals’ skills in instilling school discipline; updating education manager’s knowledge in educational law and improving skills in school maintenance culture.

“The training will let them get acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of school managers and administrators with emphasis on team building, effective communication, mentoring, coaching and counselling.”

Before declaring the workshop open, Executive chairman Kogi State Universal Basic Education Board, Comrade Suleiman Ndalayi Abdullahi in his welcome address said that “All these years, our trainings were done haphazardly with our teachers at the receiving end.” My excitement today is that; this particular training is not just done by any outfit but by a household name in the capacity building industry, NIEPA Nigeria Ondo. He encouraged the principals to make the best use of the opportunity provided by this window to build their capacities as education sector managers.

The principals were taught Leadership and School Discipline, Leadership and Communication Process, Leadership and Decision–Making Process, Leadership and School Maintenance Practices, Leadership and Conflict Management and Leadership and School Law.

The Universal Basic Education Commission sponsored workshop was held in conjunction with Kogi State Universal Basic Education Board.
