The permanent representative of Nigeria to the UN, Professor Tijjani Mohammad Bande, has been appointed the new President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, the outgoing President of the organization, disclosed this on Tuesday at a joint press briefing with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, at the State House.
The announcement was made following a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Bande was a former Director-General of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Plateau State.
He was also the Vice-Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, between 2004 and 2009 and hails from Kebbi State.
Bande holds a M.A in Political Science from the Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1981 and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Canada in 1987.
