The secretaries of education committee across all zones of Nasru-il Lahi-l-Fathi, (NASFAT) have held a summit to deliberate on alternative funding for Fountain University, Osogbo.
At the summit, they also urged the federal government to include private institutions across the country to benefit from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
They made this call during a 2-day summit for NASFAT education secretaries held at Fountain University, Osogbo, yesterday.
During a discourse with stakeholders, the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof Ibrahim Taofeeq, opined that university can’t be established to make a profit.
He said, “Tertiary institutions are non-profit making organisations as against the public belief that it’s an investment. Universities around the world are charitable organisations that get funded through their alumni.
“The federal government should include private universities as beneficiaries of TETFUND. The funds being accessed are the collective patrimony of all Nigerians.”
He said students of institutions should not be cheated as the current facilities in public schools can’t accommodate every admission seekers.
Taofeeq, thereby, commended the Chancellor of Fountain University for his leadership acumen and urged him to utilise the good structure of the institution to record more success especially in the area of funding.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Prof Sanni, in his welcome address explained that the reason for the summit is to provide a better chart for the operation of the institution.
He held that the local missioners and education secretaries can help in propagating widely in order to improve the sense of commitment to the school projects. (The Nation)
