Professor Joseph Fayeye, the Dean, College of Social and Management Sciences, Achievers University Owo (AUO), says Nigeria would only achieve social welfare and national security, if it could strengthen national vulnerability and reduce corrupt and unpatriotic attitudes in the system.

Fayeye, a professor of criminology and security studies stated this on Wednesday at the presentation of his inaugural lecture, the third in the series at Achievers University Owo (AUO).

The Precision NG reports that the varsity don would have presented the lecture last year, but was postponed owing to the covid-19 pandemic.

Fayeye whose inaugural lecture centred on “Welfare Deficit: The Achilles’ Heel and Cobra Effects in Nigeria National Security”, was of the view that corruption is a common denominator facing Nigeria’s quest for social welfare and security.

He pointed out that his knowledge and research over the years made him understand that unemployment is another huge burden on the nation’s economy. For him, under-employment can generate insecurity in urban setting.

Prof. Fayeye in the presentation quoted sources which confirmed that the security of Nigeria is often threatened by unjust political, social and economic structures.

While urging citizens to do their part, by developing high security awareness and reporting unlawful and criminal events, he said government must retrace its steps by investing in education, ensure equitable distribution of wealth and invest in infrastructure.

The Don also urged the government to solidify its relationship with Francophone nations around the country’s borders, in order to tackle the insurgents threatening the nation’s security.

On his part, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Dr Bode Ayorinde said until the best hands started manning the affairs of the country, the talk about insecurity and lack of welfare, would remain a recurring issue.

He hinged the solution to Nigeria’s problems on good leadership.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Aje said the University would continue to encourage research and learning as part of its core mandate to the society.

Other top management staff of the University at the event are the Registrar, Rev. Canon, Bayode Oladimeji; Bursar, Mr Dokun Farinre and Librarian, Mrs Darlina Ogbuiyi-Oriogu.
